Background of the Study

Stroke, often linked with underlying cardiovascular diseases, is a leading cause of disability and death globally. Post-stroke recovery, particularly among cardiac patients, is a complex process that requires continuous medical care, rehabilitation, and psychosocial support. In Nigeria, the burden of stroke is significant, with a high incidence of cardiac-related strokes (Adedeji & Obasanjo, 2024). Stroke survivors often face challenges in regaining physical, emotional, and social functioning, which can negatively impact their recovery outcomes. One of the essential components of stroke recovery is the support patients receive from healthcare professionals and their peers, which significantly influences recovery.

Nurse-led support groups have emerged as effective interventions in improving recovery outcomes for stroke patients. These support groups provide a platform for patients to share experiences, receive emotional support, and gain practical advice on managing their condition. Studies have shown that nurse-led support groups help improve the physical and emotional well-being of stroke patients by fostering a sense of community and reducing feelings of isolation (Ogunlade et al., 2023). Nurses, with their expertise in stroke rehabilitation and patient education, are well-positioned to lead such support groups, providing personalized advice and motivational counseling to enhance recovery.

In Osun State, where stroke and cardiovascular diseases are prevalent, there is a need to explore the effectiveness of nurse-led support groups in facilitating the recovery of post-stroke cardiac patients. While various interventions exist, the potential of nurse-led support groups in enhancing recovery outcomes among post-stroke cardiac patients has not been extensively researched in this region (Olutunde et al., 2024). Given the psychosocial and physical challenges faced by these patients, understanding how these support groups influence their recovery is crucial for improving care strategies in Osun State.

Statement of the Problem

Stroke, particularly among individuals with underlying cardiac conditions, is a significant health issue in Osun State, Nigeria. While many stroke patients receive medical treatment, post-stroke recovery remains slow and challenging, particularly in the absence of adequate psychosocial support. Nurse-led support groups have been shown to improve recovery outcomes in stroke patients, but their impact specifically on post-stroke cardiac patients in Osun State has not been sufficiently studied. The absence of research in this area hinders the implementation of targeted recovery programs that could enhance patient outcomes. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the impact of nurse-led support groups on the recovery of post-stroke cardiac patients in Osun State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of nurse-led support groups on the physical recovery of post-stroke cardiac patients in Osun State.
  2. To examine the emotional and psychological benefits of nurse-led support groups for post-stroke cardiac patients.
  3. To identify the challenges and barriers faced by nurses in organizing and managing support groups for post-stroke cardiac patients.

Research Questions

  1. How do nurse-led support groups impact the physical recovery of post-stroke cardiac patients in Osun State?
  2. What emotional and psychological benefits do post-stroke cardiac patients gain from participating in nurse-led support groups?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in organizing and leading support groups for post-stroke cardiac patients in Osun State?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurse-led support groups significantly improve the physical recovery of post-stroke cardiac patients in Osun State.
  2. Post-stroke cardiac patients who participate in nurse-led support groups report improved emotional and psychological outcomes.
  3. Nurses face significant challenges in organizing and managing nurse-led support groups for post-stroke cardiac patients in Osun State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on post-stroke cardiac patients in Osun State, evaluating the effectiveness of nurse-led support groups in enhancing their recovery. The research will assess physical recovery, emotional well-being, and the challenges nurses face in implementing these programs. However, the study will be limited to a specific region, and findings may not be applicable to other parts of Nigeria. Additionally, challenges such as limited participation, data collection constraints, and varying levels of nurse expertise may limit the scope of the study.

Definitions of Terms
